Koraal betekenis christendom
In de late middeleeuwen werd koraal de samenvattende benaming voor de eenstemmige, niet-gefigureerde, Latijnse liturgische gezangen van de westerse katholieke kerken. Het gregoriaanse koraal omvat zowel de vaste gezangen (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) als de introïtus-, graduale, hallelujapsalmen, tractus, enz., maar ook de door de celebrant gezongen teksten. Dit koraal is een van de vele koralen waarin Bach tekst en muziek samenbrengt om de diepe theologische betekenis van Jezus’ lijden te benadrukken. De tekst beschrijft de paradox van het lijden van Christus: hij ondergaat een straf die hij niet verdient, opdat anderen worden verlost. De muziek van dit koraal is meditatief en troostrijk. Bach.
